On August 10, 1519, Ferdinand Magellan's fleet set sail from Seville, Spain, embarking on an ambitious voyage aimed at finding a western route to the Spice Islands. Although Magellan himself did not complete the journey, being killed in the Philippines, his expedition ultimately became the first to circumnavigate the Earth. The perilous journey proved the Earth's sphericity and the vastness of its oceans, profoundly altering the world's geographical understanding.

On August 10, 1519, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan's fleet of five ships, funded by the Spanish crown, set sail from Seville. Their ambitious mission was to find a westward route to the Spice Islands, ultimately becoming the first expedition to circumnavigate the Earth. Magellan himself died during the journey in the Philippines, but one ship, the Victoria, completed the voyage under Juan Sebastián Elcano, returning to Spain in 1522. This monumental feat reshaped geographical understanding and proved the Earth was spherical.
