Helium's Solar Debut: Discovered During an Eclipse
On this day in 1868, French astronomer Pierre Janssen made a groundbreaking discovery during a total solar eclipse observed in Guntur, India. Using a spectroscope, he detected a yellow spectral line previously unknown, indicating a new element in the sun's atmosphere. This element was later named Helium, from the Greek word "helios" for sun. Its presence on Earth was only confirmed almost 30 years later. This marked the first time an element was discovered extraterrestrially before being identified on Earth.
