While the United States Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, the majority of the 56 signers did not affix their signatures until August 2, 1776. This delay allowed for the engrossment of the official document on parchment, ensuring that all delegates could sign the same physical copy. Notable signers included John Hancock, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin, marking a pivotal moment in American history.

On August 2, 1934, following the death of President Paul von Hindenburg, Adolf Hitler merged the offices of President and Chancellor, assuming the title of Führer und Reichskanzler (Leader and Reich Chancellor). This move consolidated his power, eliminating the last constitutional checks on his authority and paving the way for the totalitarian Nazi regime that would lead Germany into World War II.
