On this day in 1914, the world saw the installation of its first electric traffic light system in Cleveland, Ohio. This innovative device, developed by the American Traffic Signal Company, used red and green lights, accompanied by a buzzer, to manage vehicle flow. It marked a significant step in urban planning and road safety, paving the way for modern traffic control systems worldwide and fundamentally changing how cities manage their congested streets.

On August 5, 1884, the cornerstone for the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty was officially laid on Bedloe's Island in New York Harbor. The statue itself, a gift from France, arrived in 350 pieces the following year and was assembled atop this very foundation. Designed by French architect Richard Morris Hunt, the pedestal was crucial for the monument's grand scale. This event marked a significant step in realizing one of the world's most enduring symbols of freedom and democracy, eventually inaugurated in October 1886.
