December 10: historical facts and curiosities

Every December 10th marks Human Rights Day, commemorating the United Nations General Assembly's adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. This foundational document proclaims the inalienable rights of every human being, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. It's a global commitment to universal freedoms and equality.

On December 10th each year, the prestigious Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm and Oslo, commemorating the death of their founder, Alfred Nobel. These awards, established by Nobel's will, recognize outstanding achievements in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace. A sixth prize, in Economic Sciences, was later established in Nobel's memory by Sweden's central bank. The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901, fostering a global tradition of celebrating groundbreaking contributions to humanity's progress and understanding.
