The Inaugural Tour de France Kicked Off on This Day in 1903
On July 1, 1903, the first-ever Tour de France, a multi-stage men's bicycle race, began in Montgeron, France. Conceived by journalist Géo Lefèvre and organized by Henri Desgrange for L'Auto newspaper, the race aimed to boost its circulation. Sixty cyclists started the grueling 19-day event, covering approximately 2,428 kilometers over six stages. Maurice Garin emerged as the first champion of what would become one of the world's most prestigious and challenging sporting competitions.
