On July 15, 1965, NASA's Mariner 4 spacecraft achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first probe to successfully fly by Mars. During its mission, it captured and transmitted 21 close-up photographs of the Martian surface, revealing craters and a surprisingly barren landscape. These images were crucial for understanding the Red Planet and laid the groundwork for future robotic and human exploration, expanding our knowledge of the solar system.

On this day in 1799, the Rosetta Stone was discovered by French soldiers in Rosetta (now Rashid), Egypt. This ancient Egyptian stele features a decree inscribed in three scripts: hieroglyphic, Demotic, and ancient Greek. Its trilingual text provided the key to deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs, enabling modern scholars to understand ancient Egyptian language and culture. It is now housed in the British Museum.
