Treaty of Tordesillas Signed (1494)

On June 7, 1494, Spain and Portugal signed the Treaty of Tordesillas, an agreement brokered by the Pope. It aimed to resolve territorial disputes arising from Columbus's voyages by dividing the newly discovered lands outside Europe. A meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde islands served as the demarcation line. Lands to the east were allocated to Portugal, and those to the west to Spain. This treaty significantly influenced the colonization of the Americas, including Brazil's Portuguese heritage.
