The Day the Mona Lisa Vanished from the Louvre
On August 21, 1911, the world-renowned Mona Lisa painting was stolen from the Louvre Museum in Paris. The theft, executed by Vincenzo Peruggia, an Italian handyman who had worked at the museum, shocked the art world. Peruggia kept the masterpiece hidden for over two years, claiming he wanted to return it to Italy. It was eventually recovered in Florence in 1913, after Peruggia attempted to sell it to an art dealer, and subsequently returned to the Louvre.
